DOLPHINS
bringing together
Science, Nature the Arts and Commerce

The great success of the two day International Conference which he chaired at the Open University in December 2003, and the publication of his latest children’s book Dilo and the Witch of Black Rock, has prompted Dr Horace Dobbs to prepare a series of presentations for audiences at all levels.
Horace’s ability to explain often difficult subjects with humour, simplicity and enthusiasm has been put to good use in his books, films and numerous presentations on the radio and television.

Background

In 1974 Dr Horace Dobbs, a pioneer scuba diver and founder of The Oxford Underwater Research Group, was the only person in the world scientifically studying a wild dolphin roaming completely free in the open sea. Since then dolphin watching has become a multi-million dollar business. Dolphin Watching Around the World by Melanie Parker is IDW’s most requested publication. “Swimming with dolphins” came way ahead of the rest of the field in a recent BBC poll of 50 things to do before you die.

Content

In his presentations Horace takes his audience into the world of human/dolphin encounters in the sea. He discusses how this changes people’s lives and led to the discovery that dolphins have healing powers. Horace also reveals how, after quitting his job as head of a medical research laboratory, his study of dolphins opened up new, unexpected and astonishing opportunities - from working on an opera and publishing poetry books, to investigating profound neurological disorders such as autism, all of which he has written about in a string of books.

Into The Future

The use of the latest technology to recreate the experience of swimming with dolphins was demonstrated inside a Dome at the Open University. The next stage is to finance, develop and research the application of the Dome to enable individuals and entire families to experience the healing power of dolphins

The Dilo Dome is a new and separate venture specifically for children being researched by IDW in which fantasy replaces virtual reality. The Dilo Dome is centred on a mischievous, fictional dolphin named Dilo. The aim of the Dilo Dome is to provide a secure space inside a small, portable dome in which children, released from the constraints of adult control, are able to let their imaginations roam free, like dolphins in the open sea.

Creating Awareness and Raising Funds

The aim of Horace’s presentations is to create awareness in both children and adults of the exciting possibilities that are resulting from the harmonious coming together of humans and dolphins - the two largest brained species on our planet.
Horace’s presentations are also intended to help raise funds, directly and indirectly, to take the Dilo Dome venture forward.

Dolphin Conservation

In his presentations Horace always emphasises the importance of giving something back to the dolphins. He concludes with a plea to support IDW and other conservation organisations in their efforts to protect dolphins and secure their long term future.

World-Wide

Horace has won numerous accolades for his inspiring presentations around the world, including a Silver Bowl Award for Public Speaking. the equivalent to an Oscar, by The International Platform Association in Washington.
