The Dolphin Dome Project

The need to conduct research and make dolphin healing widely available without resorting to live captured dolphins led me to launch an ambitious innovative project - the Dolphin Dome Project, which was detailed in a publication by International Dolphin Watch in September 2000.*

* Available price £5 from the Dolphin Shop - free to Friends of IDW.

The major aims of the project were detailed as follows on the front page of the report.

The proposed action plan was to start with small domes and eventually progress to Giant Domes - Temples of the Mind - in which it would be possible for hundreds of people to have simulated dolphin experiences. Sally Galotti, who illustrated Italian editions of my Dilo books (Dilo and the Call of the Deep, Dilo Makes Friends and Dilo and the Treasure Hunters) and who worked for the Walt Disney Organisation, produced an artists impression of a Giant Dome.

Surrounded by water features, including waterfalls cascading from full - size Whale tails based upon designs by the sculptor and boat designer Trevor Goldsmith. It was envisaged that Domes based on the Goldsmith design principle would have enormous commercial applications outside dolphin therapy.

A major step towards realising these high ideals was made in 2002 when networker Shinina joined the project. She set about gathering the team of experts needed to convert the dream into reality. Gatherings were held around England and from these emerged a core group who’s progress was reported in the May 2003 issue of Dolphin - the journal of International Dolphin Watch.
